U.S. aids quake victims
The week's news at a glance.
Qazvin, Iran
The U.S. quietly sent a planeload of medical and other supplies to Iran as humanitarian relief after a recent earthquake. The quake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, killed more than 200 people and left thousands homeless when it struck near the Caspian Sea two weeks ago. After few countries responded to Iran’s appeal for help, President Bush offered U.S. assistance. But because the two countries’ relations have worsened since Bush branded Iran part of the “axis of evil,” the aid had to be delivered discreetly. The U.N. agency UNICEF took over transport, using a Ugandan flight crew.
