Mayor found guilty
The week's news at a glance.
Providence, R.I.
Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci Jr. was convicted this week of scheming to collect bribes in exchange for tax breaks and city jobs. The colorful Cianci, 61, was acquitted of actually taking any money. Free on bail, he hopped into a black limousine outside the courthouse and returned to city hall. “I didn’t do this stuff,” he said. Cianci vowed to clear his name if he had to “go all the way to the Supreme Court, The Hague, wherever they want to go.” The judge said Cianci could remain in office until his September sentencing. Gov. Lincoln Almond said the mayor should resign. “Enough is enough,” he said.
