Good Day, Bad Day

Mile-high productivity, punctuation

GOOD DAY FOR: Mile-high productivity, as Alaska Airlines said it will start testing an in-flight wireless Internet service next spring. The service, through aerial broadband provider Row 44, will allow passengers with Wi-Fi devices to connect to the Internet and stored in-flight entertainment content. (Reuters)

BAD DAY FOR: Punctuation, as the smiley-face “emoticon” turns 25 tomorrow. Carnegie Mellon professor Scott Fahlman—who says he was the first one to use the :-) combination on Sept. 19, 1982—will mark the anniversary by launching the annual $500 Smiley Award for student-led innovation in technology-assisted person-to-person communication.
