1. PM CALLS REVIEW OF BANKING SECTOR

David Cameron has announced a parliamentary review of the banking sector after the Libor fixing scandal. The news comes after the Serious Fraud Office said it was considering whether to bring criminal charges and Barclays Bank chairman Marcus Agius said he was deeply sorry and resigned.

2. EU POLL ON GENERAL ELECTION DAY?

David Cameron could hold a referendum on the EU on the same day as the next general election, senior Tories have speculated. They believe holding the polls on the same day could galvanise support in the general election. William Hague says there would be ‘very, very powerful’ case for a referendum if Europe moves towards a more federal system.

3. POLICE FEAR FRESH RIOTS

Police expect more rioting and fear that ongoing austerity measures will mean they struggle to contain unrest, according to a survey of officers. Many officers, interviewed by researchers from the London School of Economics and The Guardian, admitted that they feared for their lives as they dealt with last summer's riots.

4. SCIENTOLOGY 'EVIL' SAYS MURDOCH

Rupert Murdoch has described Scientology as a "weird cult" and its leaders as "creepy" and "maybe even evil". The media baron made his comments in a series of Tweets about the divorce of Scientology follower Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes. Murdoch was asked by one Tweeter if he is a Christian. “I try to be," he replied.

5. SOLDIERS SHOT BY AFGHAN POLICEMAN

Three British soldiers were killed by an Afghan policeman on Sunday as they left a checkpoint in Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence has said. The soldiers, two with the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards and one with the Royal Corps of Signals, were supposed to be attending a meeting of elders Nahr-e-Saraj.

6. DRUG USE SOARS AMONG UK WORKERS

Almost one million UK workers have illegal drugs in their systems, and the number of workers testing positive for drugs rose by nearly 50% between 2007 and 2011, according to new research. The report, from the drug and alcohol screening firm Concateno, analysed the results of 1.7m UK workplace drug tests over the past five years.

7. SPAIN MAKES HISTORY WITH 4-0 WIN

Spain outclassed Italy to retain the European Championship last night. In doing so, they made history by becoming the first country to win three successive major international tournaments. Vicente del Bosque's side shrugged off the 'boring' tag some have applied to them, to put in an entertaining performance and win 4-0.

8. 90% OF WOMEN ENJOY PORN

Nine out of 10 women admit enjoying pornography and almost a third say they take ideas from it to use in their sex lives, according to a survey for Glamour magazine. Meanwhile, a survey in GQ magazine found 60% of men claim to have been to an orgy, and over half say they have taken part in a threesome.

9. SHARAPOVA OUT OF WIMBLEDON

Wimbledon's second week looks set to be affected by heavy showers after the Met Office predicted rain to fall on four of the next five days. Last week the All-England Club largely avoided the downpours that caused flooding across the UK. There was play on Monday and women's top seed Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters were both knocked out.

10. HOT TICKET – BEAUTY AND THE BORSCHT

The latest branch of international Russian restaurant chain Maria Vanna has opened in London to acclaim. Popular with affluent Russian émigrés, it serves home-style hearty Russian dishes including pirogi, caviar and borscht in an ornate dining room in Knightsbridge. “The pleasantest of surprises”, says The Times.
