1. MH17: BODIES RETURN AS BOXES EXAMINED
A team of air crash investigators working in Hampshire have begun examining the black box recorders of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 shot down over Ukraine. They have already looked at the cockpit voice recorder and will now turn their attention to the flight data recorder. Meanwhile two more planes carrying bodies have arrived in the Netherlands from Ukraine.

2. US LIFTS BAN ON FLIGHTS TO TEL AVIV
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has lifted a ban on American airlines flying to Tel Aviv, imposed on Tuesday after a Hamas rocket landed just a mile from the city’s airport and hailed as a “great victory” by the militant group. Airlines will not necessarily resume flights immediately.

3. FARAH OUT OF COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Mo Farah has pulled out of the Commonwealth Games on the first day of competition in Glasgow. Farah, whose preparations had been hampered by illness, said he had failed to recover in time to compete and had made the "tough decision" to withdraw. Last night Rod Stewart and Susan Boyle performed at the opening ceremony.

4. GAZA: 15 DIE AS UN SCHOOL SHELLED
At least 15 people have been killed and 200 injured after a UN-run school in Gaza was shelled, say officials in the under-fire territory. Hundreds of Palestinians were sheltering at the school when it was hit. It is the fourth time a UN facility has been hit since Israel's offensive against Hamas began. The UN says a ceasefire is "vital".
5. US DEATH ROW MAN TAKES TWO HOURS TO DIE
An American double murderer, Joseph Wood, took two hours to die after being injected with poison at a prison in Arizona yesterday. After wood had spent an hour “gasping and snorting” in the death chamber, his lawyers filed an appeal for an emergency stay of execution. It was not granted.

6. POLICE 'SPIED' ON DE MENEZES FAMILY
Undercover officers from Scotland Yard 'spied' on the grieving family of Jean Charles de Menezes, after he was mistakenly shot by police in 2005, according to a report. Other families and justice campaigns were also targeted by the now disbanded Special Demonstration Squad. The Met said it regretted "enormously" the distress caused.

7. HACKING JOURNALIST ESCAPES JAIL
An ex-News of the World journalist who accessed the voicemails of 200 celebrities has escaped jail. Dan Evans was given a ten-month suspended sentence after admitting two counts of phone hacking, making illegal payments to officials and perverting the course of justice. He also gave evidence for the prosecution in the hacking trial.
8. ALGERIA JET WRECKAGE 'FOUND IN MALI'
An Air Algerie plane carrying 110 passengers and six crew is is believed to have crashed in Mali. The plane, chartered from Spanish airline Swiftair and flying from Burkina Faso to Algiers, disappeared 50 minutes after take off at around 1.50am GMT. Wreckage has reportedly been found north of Burkina Faso in Mali.

9. INDIA: 232 TEETH PULLED FROM BOY’S JAW
Doctors in Mumbai have removed 232 teeth from the jaw of a 17-year-old boy, Ashik Gavai, in a seven-hour operation. The teeth formed in rare type of benign tumour. The previous record was 37 teeth. The boy’s father brought him to Mumbai from a village fearing his son was suffering from cancer.

10. HOT TICKET: MEDEA AT NATIONAL THEATRE
A new adaptation of Euripides's ancient Greek tragedy Medea has opened at the National Theatre, London. Helen McCrory stars as Medea, a wife betrayed by her ambitious husband, who plots a terrible, self-destructive revenge. "Horribly gripping," says The Independent. Until 4 September.
