1. ISLAMIC STATE IS ‘BIGGEST THREAT TO USA’

US defence secretary Chuck Hagel warned last night that the Sunni militant group Islamic State, based in Syria and Iraq, is an "imminent threat … beyond anything we’ve seen". Senior general Martin Dempsey said IS would have to be fought in Syria as well as Iraq. The group had placed a $132m ransom on executed journalist James Foley.
