1. HK LEADER TELLS PROTESTERS 'GO HOME'

CY Leung, the chief executive of Hong Kong, has urged pro-democracy campaigners to “immediately” go to their homes. Huge crowds are still bringing the city’s financial district to a standstill, demanding a free vote to elect Leung’s successor. Riot police were withdrawn yesterday and the city is calm.

2. PM: WE'LL OPEN GP SURGERIES ON SUNDAY

David Cameron says he has allocated another £100m a year to ensure seven-day access to GPs across England by 2020. Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham said the PM had scrapped Labour’s GP appointment scheme and a doctors’ group questioned whether Sunday opening was the best use of resources.

GP surgeries to open at weekends under Tory plans

3. MAY: WE'LL BAN EXTREMIST GROUPS

Home secretary Theresa May has told her party conference that the next Tory government would seek additional powers to ban extremist groups and curtail the activities of individuals, using "extremism ASBOs". She said "British values" would triumph over extremists. Critics accused her of denying freedom of speech.

4. MIRROR APOLOGISES OVER NEWMARK PHOTOS

The Sunday Mirror’s editor, Lloyd Embley, has apologised to women whose pictures were used by a reporter who pretended to be a female Tory researcher to trick former Tory minister Brooks Newmark into sending explicit pictures of himself. Embley said he had thought the pictures were posed by models.

5. I.S RELEASE THIRD VIDEO OF UK HOSTAGE

A third instalment of a video showing British photographer John Cantlie has been released by the Sunni militants in Syria and Iraq calling themselves Islamic State (IS). Cantlie, a hostage, delivers a scripted message mocking Barack Obama, calling his military response to IS “disappointingly predictable”.

6. VIRGIN WANTS PREMIER LEAGUE TV PROBE

Virgin Media has called on Ofcom to investigate the way the Premier League sells the rights to live matches. The US-owned media company says the high cost of rights could cause "significant consumer harm". Virgin does not plan to bid for the rights, but says it is affected because it has to pay more to carry the sports channels that do show games.

7. THOUSANDS OF USERS TRY ‘ANTI-FACEBOOK’

A new social network dubbed the ‘anti-Facebook’ because of its pledge never to carry advertising is receiving around 31,000 requests for new accounts every hour. Ello has been set up by a bike shop owner in Vermont, Paul Budnitz, who originally intended it only for the use of around 90 of his friends.

8. HALF THE WORLD'S ANIMALS LOST IN 40 YEARS

The number of wild animals on Earth has more than halved in the last 40 years according to a shocking new report from WWF and ZSL, the owners of London Zoo. The report says populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish have fallen by an average of 52%. Habitat loss, global warming and other human activities are to blame, says the report.

9. HOT TICKET: RUDY'S RARE RECORDS LIVE

Music comedy Rudy's Rare Records, starring Lenny Henry, has transferred to the Hackney Empire, London. Set in a run-down reggae record store, it explores conflict between three generations of a Jamaican-British family with a live music soundtrack. "Wonderful, funny, humane," says the Daily Telegraph. Until 5 October.

10. INDECENT IMAGES ON DEAD TEACHER'S PC

Indecent images of young boys have been found on the computer of an Essex teacher who killed himself earlier this month, police have revealed. Martin Goldberg, a maths teacher and deputy head at Thorpe Hall School in Southend, died two weeks ago. The pictures on his computer appeared to have been taken by a camera hidden inside a bag.
