1. GOOGLE ABUSE CASE SETTLED OUT OF COURT

Search giant Google has reached an out-of-court settlement with a former banker who wanted to block "vile and abusive" material posted about him online. Daniel Hegglin was wrongly branded a murderer, paedophile and Ku Klux Klan supporter and Google has removed some web links from its search results. The case could have far-reaching consequences for how search engines handle information.

2. MAY OUTLINES NEW ANTI-TERROR LAWS

Police and security services are to be given more powers under new anti-terror laws unveiled by Home Secretary Theresa May. Schools, councils and other organisations will be expected to fight radicalisation and insurance companies will be barred from covering ransoms. Internet providers will also be forced to hand over data to the authorities.

3. IRAN NUCLEAR TALKS: DEADLINE EXTENDED

The deadline for a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme has been extended until the end of June after talks in Vienna, ending tonight, failed to reach an agreement. World powers including the US, UK Russia, China, France and Germany have been attempting to thrash out a deal that would see Iran curb its nuclear ambitions in return for the end of sanctions.

4. ARGENTINA ACCUSES BBC OF 'COVER UP'

Argentina has accused the BBC of a "cover up" over its handling of complaints about a Top Gear special filmed in the country. The show's crew and presenters were forced to flee last month after angry protests about a number plate believed to carry a reference to the Falklands War. There are now fears that the BBC will not be allowed back.

5. US POLICE SHOOT BOY OF 12 WITH FAKE GUN

Police in Cleveland, Ohio, this weekend shot dead a 12-year-old boy carrying a replica gun after a caller told the emergency services it was “probably fake”. Tamir Rice was shot on Saturday and died on Sunday morning in hospital. Cleveland police say the officers would not have been told about the call.

6. MOTHER CHARGED AS BABY LEFT IN DRAIN

A 30-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after passing cyclists found a newborn baby in a drain in western Sydney, Australia. The boy is thought to have been dropped 2.5 metres into the drain where he survived for up to five days. The baby was malnourished and dehydrated.

7. HAGEL RESIGNS AS US DEFENCE SECRETARY

US defence secretary Chuck Hagel is to stand down after less than two years as the Obama administration changes its military strategy in the face of foreign policy crises including the rise of Islamic State. Hagel, a former soldier and Republican senator, was an opponent of the Iraq war and oversaw the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

8. LEWIS HAMILTON IS F1 WORLD CHAMPION AGAIN

Lewis Hamilton has become only the fourth Briton to win the Formula 1 world title more than once after victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Hamilton is the first UK double winner since Jackie Stewart 43 years ago. Congratulated by Prince Harry, the 29-year-old said it was the “greatest day” of his life.

9. TV STAR’S WINTER EXHIBIT CLOSED DOWN

An attraction billed as a “winter wonderland of magic and drama”, designed by TV presenter Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen, has closed down after just one day because of complaints about cheap toys, long queues and disappointed children. The Magical Journey, near Sutton Coldfield, will re-open later.

10. HOT TICKET: NOEL FIELDING'S UK TOUR

British comedian Noel Fielding is touring the UK with his comedy stage show An Evening with Noel Fielding. The Mighty Boosh star uses stand-up, song, dance and animation to explore his surreal themes. "Intoxicatingly silly," says the Daily Telegraph. Until 24 February.
