1. Boris Johnson set to join the Brexit campaign

Boris Johnson is expected to announce later he will campaign for an EU exit, as ministers begin campaigning on the issue after David Cameron called a referendum for 23 June. Up to 100 Tory backbenchers could back a Brexit but the 'in' campaign is reportedly “cock a hoop” about convincing Sajid Javid and Theresa May to join its ranks.

2. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton win key primaries

Donald Trump has won the South Carolina primary and Hillary Clinton has beaten Vermont senator Bernie Sanders in the Democrat race in Nevada. Trump’s win saw former Florida Governor Jeb Bush drop out of the running. Both victories are key ahead of Super Tuesday on 1 March, when a dozen more states make their choice.

3. Amnesty accuses Russia of 'egregious' war crimes

Amnesty International says Russia is guilty of some of the most "egregious" war crimes it has seen in decades. The human rights organisation told Sky News that Moscow's warplanes have been deliberately targeting civilians and rescue workers in Syria over the last week. The Kremlin denies it has been hitting civilian areas, and insists it is only dropping bombs on terrorist targets.

4. Arrest after six die in Michigan shootings

A man has been taken into custody after a series of apparently random shootings left six people dead in the Michigan town of Kalamazoo. Four people were killed at a restaurant and two at a car dealership, according to reports. The attacks have been connected to an earlier shooting at a car park elsewhere in the town, which left one woman seriously injured.

5. Paul Daniels has incurable brain tumour

The magician Paul Daniels has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, his family has announced. A statement from his publicist said the 77-year-old entertainer had been diagnosed with "an incurable brain tumour". Daniels, whose career has spanned nearly four decades, found fame in the 1980s with his BBC TV series The Paul Daniels Magic Show.

6. Russian doping chief wanted to tell all

The former head of Russia’s anti-doping agency approached the media 10 weeks before his unexpected death offering to lift the lid on his country’s secret development of performance-enhancing drugs. Nikita Kamaev, the former executive director of Rusada, told The Sunday Times’ David Walsh he wanted to write a book that would expose the full extent of doping in Russia.

7. Islamic State cell 'was planning chemical attack'

An IS cell dismantled in Morocco was planning a chemical attack, authorities in the country say. Ten suspects were arrested in a raid on a safe house last week. They were plotting a suicide attack for the following day, Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations director Abdelhak Khiame told a press conference.

8. The curse of the 'smombies' is laid bare

The Sunday Times focuses on ‘smombies’ – pedestrians who are so hypnotised by their smartphones that they risk injury. During an investigation, the paper found that more than one in four people risked hurting themselves or others by using their smartphones as they walked in one of Britain’s busiest shopping areas last week.

9. Pensions: George Osborne 'planning a tax bombshell'

George Osborne is planning a £4bn raid on retirement incomes by scrapping the tax-free lump sum, says a former pensions minister. Steve Webb, who led pension reform for five years in the coalition, said the chancellor is plotting a “tax bombshell” that will hit hundreds of thousands of people, preventing them from accessing 25% of their pension pots tax-free in a lump sum at 55.

10. Steve Bruce mourns FA Cup replay headache

FA Cup ties that end in a draw should go straight to penalties says Hull City boss Steve Bruce after his side drew 0-0 with Arsenal yesterday. The Tigers must find a date for the fifth-round replay in a period where they are already playing 10 games in 35 days. Meanwhile, West Brom’s Chris Brunt says he is "disgusted" after being struck on the face by a coin thrown by a Baggies supporter.
