1. Trump rounds on Clinton in debate

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have locked horns in the second presidential TV debate, their first after a video surfaced showing Trump boasting about groping women. According to Sky News, the event was "ill-tempered" but Clinton let Trump off the hook. The BBC saw a "ferocious attack" by Trump and The Guardian agreed Clinton was "rattled".

2. Plan for free movement with Ireland

Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire is seeking to shift UK border controls to Ireland's ports and airports after Brexit. There are fears leaving the EU will mean a "hard" border between the province and the republic, but the new plan would preserve the common travel area between the two countries while strengthening Ireland's external borders.

3. German police arrest terror suspect

German police have captured a terror suspect they say slipped through their fingers during a raid of a flat in Chemnitz two days ago. Syrian Jaber al-Bakr, 22, who has refugee status, is accused of planning an Islamist terror attack. Several hundred grams of explosive were found in the apartment during Saturday’s raid, say investigators.

4. Ethiopia: State of emergency as protests continue

Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency after a week of violent protests against the government. Activists claim 500 have died in the protests, although the government says the death toll is lower. Demonstrators are protesting over a development scheme for the capital city and abuses of human rights.

5. Hurricane Matthew kills 17 in the US

Hurricane Matthew has killed at least 17 people in the US, while the death toll in Haiti is climbing, with Reuters suggesting more than 900 have died. The storm, which is now moving away from the US east coast, brought serious flooding in North Carolina and also affected Florida and Georgia.

6. Housing minister: Leave homes to grandchildren

Housing minister Gavin Barwell says homeowners should leave their property to their grandchildren, skipping a generation, to help young people get on the housing ladder. However, he added that he did not want to live in a society where it was necessary to have a wealthy grandparent in order to own your own home.

7. Samsung halts Galaxy Note 7 production

Samsung has stopped production of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, reports a South Korean news agency. The firm last month announced it was recalling at least 2.5 million handsets because batteries were prone to smoke or catch fire. Reports say the same problem is affecting the replacement phones.

8. Women 'now happy to be female'

Almost nine in ten British women are happy to be female and prefer being a woman to being a man, compared to a little more than half in 1947. The figure comes from a poll for the BBC's Woman's Hour, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Only 42% of women said the sexes give up an equal amount of freedom when they marry.

9. Polish film director Andrzej Wajda dies

One of Poland's most celebrated film directors has died at the age of 90. Andrzej Wajda was given an honorary Oscar in 2000 for his contribution to cinema, with many of his films inspired by his homeland's wartime and communist history. He won the Palm d'Or in 1981 for Man of Iron and his last film, this year's Powidoki (Afterimage), is Oscar-nominated.

10. Briefing: Bumper day for London as Michelin stars are served

The Ritz and Veeraswamy are among the London restaurants to have gained a star in the latest edition of the UK Michelin Guide. Half a dozen other restaurants have joined them to grab a Michelin star for the first time: Chelsea's The Five Fields, Celeste at The Lanesborough in Knightsbridge, Ellory and Pidgin of Hackney, The Ninth in Fitzrovia and Trinity in Clapham.
