Nicola Sturgeon has vowed to “find another democratic, lawful and constitutional means by which the Scottish people can express their will” on independence, after plans to hold a second referendum were blocked.

The UK Supreme Court ruled that the Scottish parliament cannot stage an indyRef2 without Westminster’s consent, dashing the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP) leader’s hopes of holding a vote next October on whether Scotland should break away from the UK.

Speaking hours after the court’s ruling was delivered, Sturgeon said that her party would instead approach the next general election as a “de facto referendum”.
