Senate confirms Vivek Murthy as surgeon general
President Obama nominated Vivek Murthy to be the next U.S. surgeon general back in November 2013. More than a year later, the Senate narrowly confirmed the nomination, 51-43.
Murthy, who has called guns a "health care issue," had vocal opponents in the National Rifle Association and Republicans. In February, the NRA wrote the Senate a letter explaining why they disapproved of the nomination.
Murthy, 37, is the youngest U.S. surgeon general and the first Indian-American to hold the title.
