The Washington Redskins have benched Robert Griffin III, the quarterback whom the team drafted to much hullabaloo in 2012. Coach Jay Gruden informed the team Wednesday that backup QB Colt McCoy would get the start Sunday, though he left the door open for RG3 to win back the job before the season ends.

Washington heralded Griffin as a franchise lifesaver upon drafting him two years ago, and the QB went on to win offensive rookie of the year honors. But Griffin has struggled with injuries and inconsistency ever since, leading the team to go in a new direction, at least for the time being.
