A Staten Island high schooler died on Monday after collapsing during a football practice held in unseasonably sweltering heat.
The student, 16-year-old Miles Kirkland-Thomas, had been doing wind sprints and was then talking to a coach around 10:30 a.m. when he collapsed. He was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead a half-hour later.
Public school rules prohibit practices when the temperature exceeds 85 degrees with humidity above 80 percent. Around the time of his death, the temperature was in the low 80s with humidity in the mid 70s, according to the National Weather Service.
