The director-general of Britain's domestic spy agency MI5 warned on Thursday that militants are actively plotting against the West, and intelligence might not be able to stop them.
"We know...that a group of core al-Qaeda terrorists in Syria is planning mass casualty attacks against the West," Andrew Parker told journalists, AFP reports. "Although we and our partners try our utmost, we know that we cannot hope to stop everything." Parker said that fighters returning to the West could come back with a "twisted ideology," and his agency needs wider powers in order to identify and monitor terrorism suspects.
