Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg says it won't take "a large adjustment" for Americans to accept same-sex marriage as the law of the land. In an interview Wednesday with Bloomberg, Ginsburg differentiated the push for marriage equality from the civil rights movement, saying the latter was "truly a we-they kind of thing."
"In recent years, people have said, 'This is the way I am,'" she said. "And others looked around, and we discovered it's our next-door neighbor — we're very fond of them — or it's our child's best friend, or even our child. I think as more and more people came out and said 'this is who I am,' the rest of us recognized that they are one of us."
The Supreme Court is set to rule this summer on the issue, and could strike down the nation's remaining gay marriage bans.
