They may be rivals, but the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers say they will share a $1.7 billion stadium in Carson, California, if they can't work out deals with their current hometowns.

In a joint statement released Thursday, the teams said they have spent years working with their cities to build new stadiums, but will join forces in the Los Angeles area if it's the best move. "We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises," they said.

In nearby Inglewood, St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke is part of a venture to build a stadium, and another facility could go up in downtown Los Angeles, The Associated Press reports.
