A major Spider-Man fan received the birthday gift of a lifetime: A signed sketch of the comic book hero by Stan Lee.
Jamel Hunter, 8, has autism, and didn't speak until he was in preschool. When it came time to celebrate his last birthday, his mother covered their entire East Harlem apartment with decorations featuring his favorite character, Spider-Man. The family was profiled in The New York Times, and the story was read by Lee's neighbor in California, who asked him to do a sketch. "It was a unique experience," Lee told the Times.
Lee was a creator of the comic as well as the writer, but never did any of the drawing. "I'm not known as an artist, which is lucky for the world," he said. That didn't stop him from sketching out Spider-Man with a word bubble saying, "Hi Jamel." The signed drawing is now proudly on display in the Hunter home.
