Jimmy Carter returns to the U.S. from Guyana early after falling ill

While in Guyana to observe the country's general election, former President Jimmy Carter had to cut his trip short after becoming ill.

In a statement, the 90-year-old's nonprofit foundation, the Carter Center, said he "was not feeling well," and returned to Atlanta on Sunday. The center, which has observed elections around the world, added, "President Carter is hopeful about Guyana's election and expressed his commitment and that of the Carter Center to supporting Guyana in the days ahead, stressing the need for a peaceful process before, during, and after the election." Carter had been in good health, and earlier this month visited the Middle East, the Los Angeles Times reports.
