John Oliver is shocked the U.S. brought charges against FIFA
On Sunday's episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver said that FIFA is "almost the dictionary definition of corruption" — and they're finally being criticized for it. Officials in Switzerland arrested FIFA officials on U.S. corruption charges Wednesday, and Oliver says the real surprise is that America was behind the arrests. "It took the country that cares the least about football to bring down the people who have been ruining it," Oliver said.
Oliver explains that the U.S. caught FIFA's corruption when former FIFA official Chuck Blazer didn't file a tax return, despite a lavish lifestyle that included a New York City apartment for his cats. He goes on to share a video of FIFA former vice president Jack Warner accidentally sharing an Onion article about FIFA giving the U.S. a 2015 World Cup.
