Army parachutist dies after accident at Chicago air show
An Army parachutist who collided with another parachutist during Saturday's Chicago Air & Water Show died Sunday afternoon from his injuries, the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
After the mid-air collision with a member of the Navy Leap Frogs jump team, Sgt. First Class Corey Hood, 32, of the Golden Knights hit an apartment building and fell to the ground, the Chicago Tribune reports. The accident took place after their teams did a maneuver together, and the Leap Frogs member suffered a broken leg. Officials say Hood had surgery Saturday to try to remove pressure on his brain, and they are investigating how the collision happened. "Our focus right now is on supporting Corey's family and grieving for our teammate," Lt. Col. Matthew Weinrich, commander of the parachute team, said.
Hood served five tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, and received two Bronze Stars, two meritorious service medals, five Army commendation medals, and other honors. Hood's online profile page said he started jumping in 2010 and had more than 500 free falls under his belt.
