The Philadelphia Eagles released Tim Tebow on Saturday, ESPN reports. The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner was thought to be in contention for a roster spot as the team's third-string quarterback, behind Sam Bradford and Mark Sanchez.

The team traded Matt Barkley, Tebow's competition for the spot, to the Arizona Cardinals on Friday. Tebow joined the team in April after sitting out two football seasons upon being released by the New York Jets and New England Patriots in 2013.

All NFL teams must whittle their rosters down to 53 players by 4 p.m. ET Saturday.
