New York real estate heir Robert Durst, 72, has agreed to return to Los Angeles to face charges that he murdered his friend, Susan Berman, The Associated Press reports. Berman was found shot dead in her Beverly Hills house in 2000, just before investigators were to speak with her about the suspicious 1982 disappearance of Durst's wife, Kathleen McCormack Durst.

Robert Durst has been jailed in Louisiana on a weapons charge since March; he was arrested shortly before the finale of the HBO documentary series The Jinx, which profiled Durst and the unsolved murder cases of people he knew. However, Durst has long maintained his innocence in both Berman's murder and his wife's disappearance. "Bob Durst didn't kill Susan Berman and doesn't know who did," his attorney Richard DeGuerin said in a statement. "He is eager to go to trial and prove his innocence."
