New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is reportedly still too upset about the vice presidential selection process to even think about trying to save Donald Trump's presidential campaign. As reports surfaced Wednesday that a group of top Republicans are contemplating stepping in to save Trump's candidacy amid skyrocketing dissatisfaction, the name of Trump's former right-hand man was conspicuously absent from the list of participants:
Influential Trump endorsers who will be pitching in include Republican National Committee head Reince Priebus, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and former Republican New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. The group is also reportedly considering recruiting Trump's children to step in with them, as they work to minimize further harm to both Trump's and the Republican Party's chances in the upcoming election.
Trump's recent attacks on the family of a slain Muslim-American soldier, his refusal to endorse House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), and his reported comments around nuclear weapons have GOP leaders in a state of panic. Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort rejected reports of the intervention on Wednesday, insisting that the GOP nominee is "in control of his own campaign."
