Hillary Clinton takes the lead in North Carolina for the first time since March

Hillary Clinton is reaping the benefits of Donald Trump's plummeting popularity in North Carolina. Public Policy Polling's latest survey out Tuesday revealed that, for the first time since March, the Democratic presidential nominee has taken the lead in the Tar Heel State. But Clinton's winning margin is slim, just 43 percent to Trump's 41 percent.
North Carolinians haven't suddenly warmed to Clinton so much as they've cooled on the idea of a President Trump; while Clinton's favorability has barely budged, Trump's has dropped by 7 points. "That has more to do with Donald Trump than it does with her," said Dean Debnam, president of Public Policy Polling. "Every time he opens his mouth he just keeps getting even more and more unpopular than he already was."
The poll's release coincides with Trump's return to North Carolina for two campaign events Tuesday. The poll, which surveyed 830 likely voters from Aug. 5 to Aug 7., has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
