In an early bright spot for Republicans, Sen. Rob Portman was easily reelected in Ohio, defeating former Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland.
Democrats had initially hoped to target Portman, who was first elected in the 2010 Republican wave — the same year in which Strickland lost reelection as governor to John Kasich.
However, Portman easily pulled away over the course of this year, and the exit poll suggests he could potentially win with around 55 or 56 percent of the vote. He has been projected as the winner by multiple news organizations, including The Associated Press and CNN.
