On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant of Texas blocked a rule by the Obama administration extending mandatory overtime pay, deciding it runs counter to the federal law that governs who is eligible for overtime.

The rule would have doubled the maximum salary a worker can earn and still receive mandatory overtime pay to $47,500, benefiting 4.2 million workers. More than 20 states and several business groups, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, argued that the rule was unlawful. It was scheduled to take effect on Dec. 1.
