President Trump has canceled his trip to the Summit of the Americas in Lima, Peru, this week in order to "oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world," the White House said Tuesday.
On Monday, Trump told reporters that "we'll be making some major decisions over the next 24 to 48 hours" about how to respond to a devastating chemical attack apparently carried out by the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over the weekend.
Trump was due to arrive in Lima on Friday and had planned to stop in Colombia after the summit. The White House said Vice President Mike Pence "will travel in [Trump's] stead."
