Former President George H.W. Bush's funeral got started with a profoundly awkward moment Wednesday morning.
President Trump arrived at the Washington National Cathedral Wednesday to take his seat next to former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, and it was the first time they've spoken since Trump's inauguration, NBC News' Monica Alba points out. This was also Trump's first time coming face to face with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in almost two years; Clinton and former President Bill Clinton were seated next to the Obamas.
As they arrived, Trump and first lady Melania Trump shook hands with their immediate predecessors, though Michelle Obama recently said should would never forgive Trump for putting her family at risk with his birther conspiracy theories. Notably, though, Trump did not greet either of the Clintons, and the former Democratic candidate for president looked straight ahead as he sat down.
