There’s nothing quite like driving a car that can tackle tough terrain and stil effortlessly cruise on the motorway, which is why my ideal car in the Audi Q lineup is the new Q7.
Living in a rural area means the new Q7’s high ride height will be ideal for handling the forest’s muddy tracks and bumpy roads. For a smoother and more level ride, I’d spec the optional adaptive air suspension. Styling is also vital for me, as I like a car that makes me want to get in and drive it.
Luckily, the latest generation of Q7 does just that, as Audi has brought in a sharper and sportier look derived from its R8 supercar – which can only be a good thing. As someone who loves performance cars and exciting engines, the range-topping SQ7 with its 4.0-litre V8 TDI diesel motor suits me perfectly.
It’s got enough power to easily merge onto motorways and its average 32.1mpg means it’ll be cheap to run, too. The new model shows that Audi can make a car through its range that’s truly for driving enthusiasts – the Q7 provides even more feedback through the wheel than the previous version. This makes it more intuitive to drive and it doesn’t feel heavy despite its large proportions.
It’s also packed with handy pieces of tech – such as the Audi smartphone interface, which helps me take my gigantic music collection on the go. I’d tick the panoramic roof on the options list too, though, so I can take in the beautiful countryside scenery while effortlessly driving through it.
Ashley's choice – Audi Q3
My wife and I have recently had a baby, so we want a car that sits somewhere between a family hatchback and a 4x4 for both practicality and safety.
The Audi Q3 fills that gap perfectly and would be my ideal car for a new family. Safety is one of my biggest concerns when choosing a family car, but that’s not an issue with the Q3 – which scored a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
I’d go for active lane assist on the options list, as it keeps the car in the lane automatically while driving on motorways. A comfortable ride quality is high on my list of priorities – as I don’t want a bumps in the road waking up the baby – which is why I’d choose the S-Line Q3 with the dynamic suspension system. The standard four-way electric lumbar support for the seats also sounds enticing, too.
I’m not a technophile, so I want a car with a nav system that’s simple and intuitive. Thankfully, the Q3’s infotainment is a doddle to use, with all the buttons being clearly labelled to easily navigate the system’s menus on the move.
Packing the boot for a family holiday couldn’t be easier either, thanks to the tailgate’s wide opening and underfloor storage bins. The rear seats can be split and lowered, so there’s plenty of room for luggage and a pushchair – plus lots of other baby stuff. It’s just a small detail, but it makes my busy family life that little bit easier.
Jamie's choice – Audi Q5
Having a car that can easily adapt to any situation is always a winner in my book, which is why I’d opt for a Q5.
I had been in the older Q5 several times and really admired the cabin quality, but Audi looks like it’s really ramped that up for the new model as much of the interior has come from the bigger Q7.
As I’m not the sort of person to turn down luxury, I quite like the idea of driving a car that feels premium on the inside, but has a more compact footprint on the outside. You never know what life has in store for you, so the Q5’s cavernous boot and acres of legroom means my friends and I can instantly head out on a road trip without having to worry about hiring a bigger vehicle.
Having a high-tech cabin is a must, which is why I’d go for the S-Line Q5 with the MMI navigation system. There are several routes I drive on a regular basis, which the MMI system will learn and can provide me with faster alternatives. It’ll even plot a regular route depending on the time of day, which means I can just get in the car and head off without typing in the postcode of my location.
My friends and I can be in the car for several hours at a time when we go on one of our epic road trips. That’s why I’d have the optional Bose sound system, so we can spend time on the drive listening to – and singing along to, of course – our favourite songs in really high-quality.
Elizabeth's choice – Audi Q2
City-centre living means a smaller car is a lot more practical for everyday driving, which is why the Q2 would be the ideal choice for me – all the benefits of a city car with the practicality of a 4x4.
In particular, parking can be a real nightmare, especially trying to squeeze in around my home, but Audi’s compact car would mean I could manoeuvre into awkward spaces with no problem.
I’d need something quite nippy for driving through busy streets, but it would also need great fuel economy and, as I like to be as green as possible, low emissions. The Q2’s TDI diesel engine seems to fit the bill and should bring down daily running costs nicely. It’s also really stylish and looks like the kind of car I’d enjoy driving, especially as I can choose different ambient lighting colours in the cabin using the LED lighting pack.
The sports seats in the S-Line version make the whole car feel much more expensive than its price tag would suggest, although I’d spec them in leather with heated front seats to take the edge of the winter chill. And as my morning commute would be difficult enough, winding my way through cars, lorries and cyclists, I would definitely opt for the advanced driver assistance package. It comes with a warning system to tell you if a car is coming into your blind spot – perfect for safely travelling through rush hour.
