UK weather: when will the sunshine return?

Spring may finally be sprung this weekend, with forecasters predicting a long stretch of warm, bright weather for Britain.

According to the Met Office, Saturday will bring “bright and sunny spells” for most of the UK. And while the odd shower is expected, conditions are forecast to become more settled next week, with “dry and probably sunny weather”, and temperatures of 20C or more.

The beginning of the following week, from Monday 23 April, is also expected to be fine and dry, with more sun and a reduced chance of rain. “Temperatures are also likely to be above average for the time of year,” the Met Office adds.

For now, however, the recent rainy weather is expected to continue, with “damp”, “gloomy” and “murky” conditions forecast for today and tonight. There are currently 42 flood alerts nationwide, meaning flooding is possible, and seven flood warnings, indicating flooding is expected.

The rain is downpour is likely to carry on until the weekend, say Met experts, although some areas may get the occasional burst of sunshine.
