Chicken is the new beef, Bernard Madoff fights eviction

Good day for cows, Bad day for a divorce

GOOD DAY FOR: Cows, as the economic downturn has budget-conscious shoppers “trading down” from beef and pork to chicken, according to Safeway and Deutsche Bank. Poultry farms and processors stand to gain from the trend, as well as from a drop in grain prices. (Bloomberg)

BAD DAY FOR: A divorce, after Bernard Madoff’s lawyer asked the courts to shield the Madoffs’ $7 million New York penthouse and another $62 million in assets from victims of his alleged Ponzi scheme, on the grounds that they belong to Madoff’s wife, Ruth. The assets “are unrelated to the alleged Madoff fraud and only Ruth Madoff has a beneficial interest in these assets,” said Madoff lawyer Ira Sorkin. So far, $970 million has been recovered for defrauded Madoff investors. (AP in Yahoo! Finance)
