Hillary Clinton wasn't quick to commit one way or another when CBS News' Scott Pelley asked her in a recent interview whether she had ever lied to the American people.

"You talk about leveling with the American people," Pelley said to Clinton, who has struggled in the polls when it comes to questions about honesty and trustworthiness. "Have you always told the truth?"

"I've always tried to," Clinton responded. "Always. Always."

Pelley stopped her, calling her answer out for its "wiggle room." "I mean, Jimmy Carter said, 'I will never lie to you,'" Pelley said.

"Well, but, you know, you're asking me to say, "Have I ever?," Clinton said. "I don't believe I ever have. I don't believe I ever have. I don't believe I ever will. I'm gonna do the best I can to level with the American people."
