Police have launched an investigation after discovering a "forest" of cannabis growing in an affluent London suburb.

Officers found more than 150 plants – some of which were more than five feet tall – on disused private land in Kingston.

"The area these plants were growing on was the size of a football pitch, it looked like a small forest of Christmas trees and was complete with a gazebo," said PC Sarah Henderson.

"Whoever set this up used a really remote spot; the only way to get there was a 20 minute walk through wasteland. But all their time, trouble and gardening skills will go unrewarded, as the whole lot will now be destroyed by police," she said.

"Welcome to the leafy suburbs of Kingston!" two local police sergeants also tweeted, according to the Evening Standard.

No arrests have yet been made and officers are preparing to remove and destroy the class B drugs.

Police are urging anyone with information about the plants to call 101.
