Bonfire night: why do we focus on Guy Fawkes?

Crowds line the street to watch the Bonfire Societies parade through the town centre in Lewes, Sussex. Each year, Lewes hosts the biggest Bonfire Night event in the UK, drawing in over 30,000 spectators. The night is celebrated with a parade, several bonfires and a large firework display.

A Guy Fawkes effigy is paraded through the streets during Bonfire Night celebrations. Traditionally, the effigy is burnt on the bonfire at the end of the parade.

There are more than 30 Bonfire Societies in Sussex, seven of which are from Lewes.
