A list of the 20 best British town and cities in which to work has one notable absence - London.

Employer rating website Glassdoor based the ranking on three factors: hiring opportunity; cost of living, and overall job satisfaction.

Cambridge came top, scoring the highest among employees. The university city has a population of 145,818 with a median base salary of £35,000 and average property prices of £436,932.

Glassdoor ranks the city's "hot jobs" as a software engineer, chef and sales representative.

"Cambridge has long had a reputation for one of Britain's most loved cities, but now it's emerged as a prime spot for high-tech companies," said the company's chief economist, Dr Andrew Chamberlain.

Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Leeds and Peterborough round up the top five. Aberdeen is Scotland's best ranked city at number 12, with Glasgow and Edinburgh coming in at 15 and 16 respectively.

Despite being the country's capital and financial hub, London failed to make the list due to the high cost of living and the competitive job market, The Independent reports.

"These results are a reminder that although there are more jobs in London and employees are generally pretty satisfied, it is a competitive place to work and an expensive place to live," Chamberlain said.
