Los Angeles County Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) has not commented on the case, citing confidentiality laws, but a source "familiar with the situation" told CNN that Pitt has been completely cleared of any wrongdoing.

Jolie is seeking sole physical custody of their six children, who are aged between eight and 15, meaning they would live with her and Pitt could visit.

However, Californian law usually favours joint custody, says Sky News. This is what the 52-year-old actor is seeking.

According to a representative for Jolie, "Angelina said from the beginning that she felt she had to take action for the health of the family and is relieved that, after their eight-week involvement, the DCFS is now satisfied the safeguards are put in place that will allow the children to heal."

A representative for Pitt declined to comment.

The couple had been together since starring in Mr and Mrs Smith in 2005 and married two years ago.
