In a statement on Friday, Sargeant had vowed to clear his name, calling the allegations “shocking and distressing”. His family today said they were “devastated beyond words”, describing him as “the glue that bound us together”.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn described his death as “terrible and deeply shocking news”, while deputy leader Tom Watson said his “thoughts and prayers are with Carl Sargeant’s family right now”.

The Welsh Assembly’s business for the day was cancelled as a mark of respect, the BBC adds.
