Filming is currently underway for the eighth series of Death in Paradise, but fans have a long wait for a new offering of the hit BBC detective drama.

DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon) and his team will be back on our screens in early 2019 to solve murder cases on the fictional island of Saint Marie.

“We’re delighted to be returning to Saint Marie for more fun and intrigue – as well as some big surprises,” producer Tim Key has promised of the latest series.

The hit television show is filmed in Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory in the middle of the Caribbean, which has become increasingly popular with tourists since the show first aired in 2011.

“It’s a joy to work on a show that is so loved by its audience and we can’t wait to head back to Guadeloupe,” Key said earlier this year.

Much of the filming takes place in the small town of Deshaies, located on the north-west coast of Basse-Terre Island, one of two islands that make up the territory.

Basse-Terre is “toweringly, rampantly green and heart-stoppingly beautiful, with jungle that tumbles down the mountain into steep-sided coves of sugary orange sand”, The Daily Telegraph says.

According to the Radio Times, the production company takes over the town’s church hall in Deshaies to use as the police station, with the priest’s office becoming the “incident room”.

But it is the location of DI Mooney’s shack, set on the idyllic Le Perle Beach, that has most impressed viewers. It is “one of the most beautiful spots on the island, with its miles of unspoilt beach fringed by palm trees”, the website reports.

Location manager James Chambers says working in a tropical paradise has obvious advantages.

“It’s a change from working in London where every scene has been used a million times before,” he told the Daily Telegraph. “The beaches are a cinch – and then there are the benefits of the sunshine, the sea and working so close to nature.”
