Teen rescues kidnapped child
A teenager from Lancaster, Pa., helped rescue an abducted 5-year-old this week. After hearing that the girl had been snatched near his home, Temar Boggs, 15, set out with some friends on bicycles to search for her. He spotted a car crawling around the neighborhood, and cycled close enough to see a child in the passenger seat. The suspected abductor quickly pushed his captive out of the car and drove off, leaving Boggs to comfort the terrified child. Boggs denied being a hero. “I’m just a normal person who did a thing that anybody else would do,” he said.

Emily Kraus and her boyfriend were driving to Hershey, Pa., to attend a Dave Matthews concert when they spotted a familiar-looking hitchhiker by the side of the road. To their surprise, it was the very rock ’n’ roller they were on their way to see. Matthews had been riding his bicycle when he got a flat, and was stranded without a cellphone only hours before he was due onstage. Kraus happily agreed to give Matthews a lift, and the Grammy-winning singer repaid the couple with dinner, backstage passes, and front-row seats to the show.
Man swims five hours to save family
A man swam for five hours straight to fetch help for his family last week, after their boat capsized in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. John Riggs Jr. was boating off the coast of Deal Island, Md., with his father, his sister, her 3-year-old son, and a 9-year-old niece when the boat overturned. As darkness fell, Riggs set out through the fierce tides of the Chesapeake. Five hours later, he struggled ashore to fetch help. Thanks to his bravery, rescue boats were able to retrieve his family. “It’s an amazing story,” said Deal Island Fire Chief Donald Ford. “The man’s a hero.”
