Apple's WWDC 2013 keynote: Live-blogging the announcements

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off today at 1 p.m. EST (10 a.m. PST). You can watch it live for yourself here (Safari only). Here's our previous coverage on what we can expect from iOS 7. Follow along! And be sure to hit refresh every so often.

New camera: You can add filters a la Instagram and VSCO Cam. Multiple people can add to the same photo stream.

Siri: Now comes with Bing results if you want to search the web. Says John Gruber: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." You can also select a male voice if you'd like.

Apps also update automatically! This. Is. Long. Overdue. John McCain is THRILLED.

Apple's iRadio service has a name now: iTunes Radio. It's built right into the Music app. Looks to be integrating Twitter, too. The service will keep track of all the songs you listen to and sync a listen-able history in the Cloud. It's free with ads, but if you subscribe to iTunes Match you can get ad-free listening.

FaceTime can go audio-only if you so desire: No more pixlated close-ups of Mom's face!

New feature called Activation Lock: Think of it like a remote kill-switch that disables phones even when a thief turns it off.

iOS 7 beta is available today. Everyone else can get it in the fall.

2:40 p.m.: "Air Drop" looks awesome: You can share content with another iPhone over wireless. "No bumping," says Apple.

2:35 p.m.: New Safari features: Interface is full screen. Completely redesigned like everything else. There's an intelligent search field that auto-populates with Google Search suggestions. Reading List is continuous, just like in OS X Mavericks.

Tab-scrolling is neat: Up-and-down instead of side-to-side. Might need to switch over from Chrome. Here's what flipping through websites looks like:

2:32 p.m.: 10 new features.

Starting with "Control Center": Adjust brightness, settings, etc. It's translucent, not black and white as anticipated.

"Multitasking" keeps battery life in mind. In iOS 7 you can multitask in all apps, not just music. Double tap to switch between apps flows pretty cool.

2:29 p.m.: Mail has a new back gesture. Lots of sliding around — think Mailbox.

2:25 p.m.: Ha ha, it sounds like a rock concert. More on iOS 7: As you move the device in your hand, the display re-orients three-dimensionally.

2:22 p.m.: Okay. Fine. It's gorgeous. The background/icons tilt depending on how you're viewing it. Geez. I'm going to try and wrangle up a video so you guys can see it in action.

2:21 p.m.: All Helvetica everything. The "flat" design doesn't look Windows-y at all. It's actually quite pretty.

2:20 p.m. Jony Ive: "We've always thought of design of being so much more than the way something works... Ultimately, design defines so much of our experience."

2:16 p.m.: This is a telling chart:

2:15 p.m.: iPhone and iPad users shopped twice as much as Android owners on Black Friday. Says iOS owners are 97 percent satisfied.

2:11 p.m.: Finally. iOS. Tim Cook: "We have now sold over 600 million iOS devices." iPhone users use their phones 50 percent more than Android users, he says.

2:09 p.m.: More re: iWork:

2:06 p.m.: iWork is getting an update! It's now available in iCloud. iWor... zZzzzzzZZZZZzzzzZzzzzz.

2:05 p.m.: It's coming later this year. (No optical drive, though.)

1:59 p.m.: It's being introduced with a cheesy rock video showing all its curves. Intel Xeon chip. 12-core configs, 256-bit wide floating point. 10x faster than any hard drive you can put in a Macbook, unless I misheard that. Assembled in the USA, too.

This thing is a monster. It looks kind of like Darth Vader:

1:55 p.m.: New Mac Pro. FINALLY. "Can't innovate anymore, my ass." — Phil Schiller

1:54 p.m.: Apple is reporting that the NEW 11-inch Macbook Air will get 9 hours, 13-inch will get 12 hours. (Let's hope it's true.)

No Retina display though. Double the memory of previous models. Same prices. Ships today.

1:49 p.m.: New interface for iBooks looks smooth. Google-y. Question, though: Does anyone read books on their desktop? Seems cumbersome.

1:47 p.m.: Total times the word "amazing" has been used today: 845,392 and counting.

1:44 p.m.: "Maps!"

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] Kind of cool: You can look up a mapping route on your desktop version of Apple Maps, and it will port directly for your phone. Catching up to Android every day! (Just kidding. Stick with Google Maps.)

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:43 p.m.: Looks like Mavericks is getting a lot of iOS design elements. Notifications pop up near the top of your screen, like if you're using an iPhone.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] The new Calendar looks great. Very clean. It dropped the skeumorphic leather details.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:39 p.m.: Safari let's you boot the Reading List in the sidebar. Lets you read through saved articles/stories continuously.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] Now, they're introducing iCloud keychain. Always encrypted. Safari can also auto-suggest a password for you and sync it across your systems and log-ins. Can also suggest your credit cards. Question: Will the average consumer actually use/trust this?

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:37 p.m.: They're giving a demo of "smooth scrolling." Yeah, scrolling through websites and messages is fast. But this whole keynote is pretty weird so far, overall. Lots of hitches.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:35 p.m.: Safari is adding an optional sidebar so you can continually scroll through articles. Looks "meh."

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:29 p.m.: Sorry for the trouble, folks! All the livestreams are a little buggy. Basically, they're giving a demo of drag-and-drop full-sized windows across different screens in OS X Mavericks.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:26 p.m.: Tagging documents is long overdue. You can assign multiple tags to a single document. This'll make searching for files much easier, especially when you forget a document name.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:25 p.m.: Multiple displays. Crowd goes nuts.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:21 p.m.: The new OS X is called SEA LION. Just kidding. It's OS X Mavericks. It's named after the famed California surf break.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] Finally: Finder tabs! (Think browser tabs.) It's been a long time coming. You can also add Tags to things in Finder: i.e. "Photo Apps"

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:19 p.m.: Cook is talking about Macs. Nothing new yet... just more Apple chest puffing. Shots fired at Windows 8, though!

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:16 p.m.: The cars are running using iOS. It's being called a "video game in the real world." Kind of neat.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:14 p.m.: Onki is a startup demo-ing some little smart cars. They're going around a track, presumably autonomously. They had to reset midway through. Awkward silence. Yeouch.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:13 p.m.: Haha

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:11 p.m.: We've paid developers $10 billion, says Tim Cook. "That's 3x more than all other platforms combined." Okay.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 1:10 p.m.: 50 billion apps download in 5 years. 900,000 iOS apps. 93 percent of those are downloaded each month, says Tim Cook.

[[ weak applause from the crowd ]] 12:54 p.m.: If nebulous Apple rumors aren't your cup of tea, Microsoft is giving a keynote re: the Xbox One at E3. Since I'm out of eyeballs, ears, and typing fingers at the moment, head over to Gizmodo to check it out.
