Show of the week: Frontline: Poor Kids
“I live in a shelter. I wish I never lived here.” So says one of the three young girls Frontline follows in this disturbing and affecting report. All three hail from the Quad Cities area, on the Iowa-Illinois border. All three have parents who’ve suffered ruinous reversals of fortune during the Great Recession. And all three offer bleak visions of what awaits them in adulthood. Saddest of all, they are only three among many: One in five American children now lives below the poverty line.
