But in this series of longer-form reports, Theroux takes a more thoughtful approach. Since its 2009 debut, much of this taut, flavorful ensemble drama about Los Angeles police officers has revolved around rookie Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) and his training officer, John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz). Now the third season ends with Sherman’s daunting final day as a rookie—when the greatest of his many challenges is his partner’s growing dependence on painkillers. Tuesday, March 8, at 10 p.m., TNT

Character actor Steve Schirripa of The Sopranos is an appropriate host for this new true-crime series about professional assassinations. In the premiere, former mob hit man “Big Sal” Miciotta shares the saga of Larry “Champagne” Carrozza, an ambitious Colombo-family soldier who dated one of his bosses’ daughters and thought he was destined for big things—until Miciotta took him on a one-way trip to Brooklyn.
