Show of the week: Independent Lens: Children of Haiti
Children of Haiti follows three of Haiti’s estimated 1 million orphans. The country's epidemic level of orphans was exacerbated by last year's earthquake.
The earthquake that devastated Haiti a year ago exacerbated one of the nation’s most wrenching problems—its epidemic-level population of orphans. Filmed in the northern city of Cap-Haitien, this affecting documentary follows three of Haiti’s estimated 1 million orphans as each struggles to get by in a poverty-ravaged nation. An hour before Children of Haiti airs, Frontline examines one of the greatest threats to Haiti’s stability as it rebuilds: criminal gang members who escaped prison en masse in the chaos that followed the quake.
