Witness: Katrina

Amateur video from 2005, much of it never before shown, has been mixed with news reports, government footage, and other material to form a gripping chronicle of the 72 hours during which Hurricane Katrina went from massive storm to deadly disaster. In the fall of 1993, following the murder of his father, Michael Jordan made the startling decision to leave basketball’s Chicago Bulls to play for a minor league baseball team. Part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 series of documentaries, this film from director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham), himself a former minor leaguer, argues that Jordan’s motives were misunderstood: Widely regarded as arrogant for presuming he could switch sports, Jordan was actually deliberately humbling himself. NOVA: The Four-Winged Dinosaur

Unusually fine-grained fossils found in China’s Liaoning Province reveal a strange, pigeon-size dinosaur that had feathers on both its front and back limbs. But could it really fly? Frontline: Law & Disorder

Henry Glover, a New Orleans man, disappeared during Hurricane Katrina and was later found incinerated in a car. His case has led to the indictment of local police officers on charges including obstruction of justice, violation of civil rights, and even murder. It serves as the jumping-off point for this report on the law-enforcement response to Katrina, a collaboration between Frontline, the journalistic nonprofit ProPublica, and the New Orleans Times-Picayune. 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards

First-time host Jimmy Fallon emcees the ceremonies live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. AMC’s Mad Men is the leading contender among dramas, with 17 nominations; Fox’s Glee leads the comedy pack, with 19 nominations; and HBO’s World War II epic The Pacific dominates the miniseries category, with 24 nods.
