The price of gasoline last week hit another, inflation-adjusted high, surging 7 cents to $3.26 for a gallon of self-serve regular, according to the latest Lundberg survey. Newark, N.J.’s average price of $3.03 was the nation’s lowest. San Franciscans paid the most, $3.66.

Wall Street banks have cut more than 34,000 jobs since the start of the credit crisis last July, according to a securities-industry trade association. Some recruiters expect total layoffs to top 100,000 before the credit crunch ends.

Starbucks baristas in California got a big tip last week, after a state judge ruled that the coffee chain improperly allowed management employees to share in tips. If the ruling is upheld, about 100,000 current and former baristas will share in a $105 million payout.

Fox overtook CBS this week as the most watched network, on the strength of its American Idol, Cops, and America’s Most Wanted franchises. CBS had held the top rank for five seasons. “Fox has been harmed the least by the writers’ strike of any of the broadcast networks,” said Horizon Media analyst Brad Adgate. “This could be just temporary.”

Jordan’s, a Boston-area furniture chain, is offering customers free furniture if the Red Sox sweep the 2008 World Series, as they did last year. In 2007, the store offered customers free furniture if the Sox merely won the World Series; some 24,000 customers collected on the giveaway, which was funded through an insurance policy.
