Model peace deal

The week's news at a glance.

Juba, Sudan

Sudan’s peace deal between the Muslim north and the Christian and animist south is a blueprint for peace in Darfur, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said this week. The 2005 pact took years to negotiate but ultimately ended a 21-year civil war. The Darfur conflict, a separate war that began in 2003 and is still going on, pits government-backed Arab militias against black rebels and villagers. “We are working very hard to finalize a detailed arrangement for peace negotiation talks as soon as possible,” Ban said.
