Miners trapped

The week's news at a glance.

Huntington, Utah

Rescue workers were trying feverishly this week to rescue six coal miners who were trapped 1,500 feet below the earth’s surface after the shaft where they were working collapsed. The men have not been heard from. Rescuers at first hoped to reach them through an old mine shaft, but that proved too dangerous. Instead, they are drilling a new hole, which could take days. “We will be on our feet until we get these men out, one way or another,” said mine owner Robert Murray. Murray said the cave-in was caused by a small earthquake, citing a 3.9 seismic reading at the time. But geologists said the seismic activity may have been caused by the mine collapse itself.
