Gitmo to close?
The week's news at a glance.
Washington, D.C.
The Bush administration last week dismissed reports that it would soon close the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where 375 suspected foreign terrorists are held. Pressure to close the prison has been building since the Supreme Court ruled last year that the system for trying prisoners there was unconstitutional. Courts have also faulted the system that replaced it. An administration spokesman said President Bush wants to close the prison, but not until other offshore detention facilities are found for the prisoners. “We couldn’t secure a conviction” in the U.S., an unnamed White House official told Foxnews.com. “That’s why we don’t want to bring them stateside.”
