Israeli forces strike
The week's news at a glance.
Gaza
Israeli planes began bombing militant strongholds in Gaza this week, after Hamas fired more than 120 rockets at an Israeli town. One Israeli woman was killed. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered the military to target Hamas after his coalition partners threatened to leave the government. “Either we take apart Hamas or we take apart the government,” said Avigdor Lieberman of the Israel Is Our Home party. More than 40 Palestinians, most of them Hamas gunmen, were killed. The Israeli attacks quieted the factional fighting that has been raging between Hamas and Fatah, which killed 50 people in Gaza last week.
